I'm reading Beloved!!!!!!!
By Toni Morrison!!!!
They made a movie out of it. Oprah Winfrey was in it? I wonder if that's a joke.. No, I think it's not. Here's the movie cover, get a feel for it: http://dvdandcdspot.com/images/beloved.jpg
Well anyway, this book was written in 1987 and won the Pulitzer Prize. It's the best book I have ever read. Dean calls it the greatest American novel, and I laughed at that statement at first, but it really is incredible; I've never read a book like it.
It's about this family during the civil war and post-civil war. It describes the life of former slave, Sethe, and her journey from enslavement to freedom.
It's difficult to understand the chronology of events during their life because it's all told in flash-backs and out of order. It's really interesting because the narrator shifts attention from each character so quickly, so every event (current event, not memory) is told from a different perspective, completely clouded by that character's opinions, and suddenly it will shift focus really fluidly to another character.
It does a really amazing job of revealing the emotions that surrounded the civil war--the fear, especially. Jeez this is a good book. I'm doing it injustice, I feel really lousy about this now. Guhh-hh. Well, I still have 1/3 to go. It takes FOREVER to read this book because it's so..powerful, I guess. So, you know, I guess I'll go read now. xx00000

I tried to follow that link to the movie poster, and the school internet filters blocked it and said it was 'Adult Content/Pornography.'
ReplyDeleteI have Beloved sitting on my bookshelf, I just never made the initiative to read it. I think I will now- you made it seem very powerful and moving.
Damn, you read a lot!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you have convinced me to read this book... but I might watch the movie if Oprah's in it.
You are sooooo right. It is quite good (esp. if Dean said so.... ha!!). Have you read any of her other works? I'm interested to see what you'd say about them...
ReplyDeleteNoo, I haven't! I'd really like to though. If you tell me one to read I'll make sure to read it. I've got a long summer ahead of me..
